About FitRight Founder Taryn Watson
Taryn Watson is a Women’s Health & Continence Physiotherapist from Perth, Western Australia, with a particular passion for providing pelvic floor friendly exercise options for women in their childbearing years.
After graduating as a physiotherapist in 2007, Taryn spent the next 5 years working as a physiotherapist on maternity wards in both Perth and London. Over this time she completed a year of clinical pilates training and completed her Masters in Continence & Women’s Health Physiotherapy. She worked for Lifecare Physiotherapy, and was put in charge of running the Women’s Health & Continence services across all of their Western Australian branches.
As part of her Masters studies, Taryn undertook a research project on the rate of urine leakage in women who attend gyms to exercise. The results of this study were that a staggering 50% of the women surveyed reported that they suffered from this. This led to Taryn questioning why there weren’t more low impact, pelvic-floor friendly group exercise classes in the community, and why women aren’t routinely being pre-screened by class instructors for these issues.
Seeing a gap in the market, Taryn launched FitRight in 2014, and began training other physiotherapists to join her in providing safe, widely accessible exercise classes for expectant and new Mums in a variety of locations around Perth.
She has since grown her team to more than 20 physiotherapists, and has grown the services to include education workshops and education and exercise video resources.
Taryn is excited about what the future holds, and hopes that FitRight is changing the face of pregnancy and postnatal exercise. Her aim is that current and future generations of childbearing women will be empowered to keep as fit and active as possible in a way that protects their pelvic floor from unnecessary harm!
